What is Myteka Tablets 5mg?

Myteka Tablets 5mg contain Montelukast sodium — a leukotriene receptor antagonist or LTRA (لیوکوٹرین بلاک کرنے والی دوا) used in children aged 6 to 14 years for the long-term management of asthma (دمہ), prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (ورزش سے سانس کی نالی کا تنگ ہونا), and treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (موسمی اور سال بھر رہنے والی ناک کی الرجی). When the airways or nasal passages are exposed to allergens — such as pollen, dust mites, animal dander, or cold air — the immune system releases inflammatory chemicals called leukotrienes (لیوکوٹرینز) that cause the airways to narrow, swell, and produce excess mucus. Montelukast blocks the receptors these chemicals attach to — preventing the inflammatory cascade that causes asthma and allergy symptoms. The 5mg chewable tablet is specifically dosed for children aged 6 to 14 years — providing the intermediate dose between the 4mg formulation for young children and the 10mg adult tablet. Myteka 5mg requires a valid prescription and must be taken daily as directed by a doctor.

What is Myteka 5mg Used For?

Myteka Tablets 5mg is indicated for the following conditions in children aged 6 to 14 years:

Asthma — Long-Term Management (دمہ کا طویل مدتی علاج) — daily prevention and control of asthma symptoms including recurrent wheezing (سانس میں سیٹی کی آواز), shortness of breath (سانس پھولنا), chest tightness (سینے میں جکڑن), and coughing (کھانسی). Montelukast is a controller medicine — it prevents symptoms from developing rather than treating acute attacks in progress

Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction — EIB (ورزش سے سانس کی نالی کا تنگ ہونا) — prevents the airway narrowing triggered by physical activity and exercise in asthmatic children — taken at least 2 hours before exercise when used specifically for this purpose

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (موسمی الرجی) — treatment of allergy symptoms caused by seasonal triggers such as pollen — including sneezing (چھینکیں), runny nose (بہتی ناک), nasal congestion (بند ناک), and itchy, watery eyes (آنکھوں میں خارش)

Perennial Allergic Rhinitis (سال بھر رہنے والی الرجی) — treatment of year-round allergy symptoms caused by persistent allergens such as house dust mites, mould, and pet dander

How Does Myteka 5mg Work?

Myteka contains Montelukast sodium — a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist that targets the inflammatory process at its root.

When the airways or nasal passages encounter an allergen or trigger, specialised immune cells release cysteinyl leukotrienes — particularly LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4 (سسٹینائل لیوکوٹرینز). These chemicals bind to CysLT1 receptors on the smooth muscle and mucous membranes lining the airways and nasal passages — triggering three key inflammatory responses: airway narrowing and bronchoconstriction (سانس کی نالی کا تنگ ہونا), increased mucus production (بلغم کا زیادہ بننا), and mucosal swelling (سوزش).

Montelukast selectively blocks the CysLT1 receptor — preventing leukotrienes from binding and activating this inflammatory pathway. The result is reduced airway inflammation, prevented bronchoconstriction, decreased mucus secretion, and relief from nasal congestion and allergy symptoms.

When taken every day, Montelukast provides consistent, ongoing receptor blockade — reducing both the frequency and severity of asthma and allergy symptoms over time. At 5mg, the dose is calibrated for the body weight and pharmacokinetic profile of children aged 6 to 14 years — providing the same level of receptor blockade achieved by the 10mg adult dose at the lower paediatric weight.

Dosage and Administration

Myteka 5mg must be taken exactly as prescribed by the child's doctor. Do not change the dose without medical advice (ڈاکٹر کے مشورے کے بغیر خوراک تبدیل نہ کریں).

Age Group Indication Dose Timing
Children 6 to 14 years Asthma or Allergic Rhinitis One 5mg chewable tablet once daily Evening — same time each day
Children 6 to 14 years Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction One 5mg chewable tablet At least 2 hours before exercise

Important Administration Instructions:

  • Chewable tablet — chew thoroughly before swallowing (گولی کو اچھی طرح چبا کر نگلیں)
  • Can be given with or without food
  • For asthma and rhinitis — give once every evening at the same time (شام کو ایک ہی وقت پر دیں)
  • This is a controller medicine — it must be given every day for sustained benefit, even when the child feels completely well and has no symptoms (علامات نہ ہوں تب بھی دوا جاری رکھیں)
  • If used for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction only — give at least 2 hours before exercise. If the child is already on daily Myteka, do not give an extra dose on exercise days
  • Never use Myteka as a rescue medicine during an acute asthma attack — the child's prescribed rescue inhaler (such as Salbutamol) must be used for sudden breathing difficulty
  • If a dose is missed (خوراک بھول جائیں) — give it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Never give a double dose.

Active Ingredients

Ingredient Role
Montelukast Sodium 5mg Leukotriene receptor antagonist — selectively blocks CysLT1 receptors to prevent leukotriene-driven airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, mucus production, and nasal congestion

Also contains standard chewable tablet excipients including microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, and magnesium stearate. Please check the product label or ask your pharmacist for full composition details. Parents of children with lactose intolerance should note the presence of lactose monohydrate.

Who Should NOT Use Myteka 5mg?

Do not use Myteka if the child (استعمال نہ کریں اگر):

  • Is allergic to Montelukast or any other ingredient in the tablet (الرجی ہو)
  • Is under 6 years of age — the 4mg chewable tablet formulation is appropriate for children aged 6 months to 5 years

Tell your doctor before use if (ڈاکٹر کو بتائیں اگر):

  • The child has phenylketonuria (فینائل کیٹونیوریا) — check the product label carefully as some formulations may contain aspartame
  • The child has liver problems (جگر کی بیماری) — Montelukast is metabolised by the liver
  • The child has known aspirin or NSAID sensitivity (اسپرین سے الرجی) — Montelukast may not fully prevent all leukotriene-mediated reactions in aspirin-sensitive patients
  • The child shows any change in mood, behaviour, or sleep after starting Myteka — neuropsychiatric effects must be reported to the doctor immediately

Side Effects

Not everyone will experience side effects. Myteka 5mg is generally well tolerated in children aged 6 to 14 years.

Common Side Effects (عام ضمنی اثرات):

  • Upper respiratory tract infections — cold-like symptoms (نزلہ زکام)
  • Headache (سردرد)
  • Stomach pain or discomfort (پیٹ میں درد)
  • Thirst (پیاس زیادہ لگنا)
  • Diarrhoea (اسہال) or nausea (متلی)
  • Skin rash (جلد پر دانے)

Serious Side Effects (سنگین ضمنی اثرات — consult your doctor promptly):

  • Neuropsychiatric effects (دماغی اور رویے کی تبدیلیاں) — the most important safety warning for Montelukast. Reported effects include agitation (بے چینی), aggressive behaviour (جارحانہ رویہ), anxiety (پریشانی), nightmares (ڈراؤنے خواب), sleep disturbances (نیند میں خرابی), hallucinations (وہم), depression (ڈپریشن), and in rare cases suicidal thoughts. Parents and caregivers should monitor carefully — stop Myteka and contact the doctor immediately if any of these are noticed
  • Severe allergic reaction (شدید الرجی) — facial swelling, difficulty breathing — seek emergency help immediately
  • Liver problems (جگر کی تکلیف) — yellowing of skin or eyes (یرقان) — stop and consult doctor immediately
  • Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (نایاب خون کی بیماری) — rare — worsening respiratory symptoms with rash and fever — seek medical assessment

Stop the medicine and contact the child's doctor immediately if any serious side effect occurs (فوری طور پر ڈاکٹر سے رابطہ کریں).

Drug Interactions

Always inform the child's doctor and pharmacist about all medicines currently being given (تمام ادویات کے بارے میں ڈاکٹر کو بتائیں).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Myteka 5mg used for?

Myteka 5mg contains Montelukast — a leukotriene receptor antagonist used in children aged 6 to 14 years to control asthma (دمہ), prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (ورزش سے سانس کی نالی کا تنگ ہونا), and treat seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (ناک کی الرجی). It works by blocking leukotriene receptors — preventing airway inflammation, narrowing, and mucus production that cause asthma and allergy symptoms.

What is the difference between Myteka 4mg and 5mg?

Both tablets contain the same active ingredient — Montelukast — and work in exactly the same way. The difference is the dose and the age group each is designed for. The 4mg chewable tablet is for younger children aged 6 months to 5 years. The 5mg chewable tablet is for children aged 6 to 14 years — providing the higher dose appropriate for the larger body weight of this age group while still achieving the same level of leukotriene receptor blockade. Never use the adult 10mg tablet in a child aged 6 to 14 years without specific medical advice.

Does Myteka 5mg need to be taken every day even when the child has no symptoms?

Yes — this is one of the most important points about Montelukast. It is a controller medicine that works by maintaining consistent leukotriene receptor blockade every day — not just on symptomatic days. Stopping the medicine when symptoms are absent will allow leukotriene-driven inflammation to gradually return — increasing the risk of asthma episodes and allergy flares. Continue giving the tablet every evening as prescribed — even on days when the child appears completely well (علامات نہ ہوں تب بھی دوا جاری رکھیں).

Can Myteka 5mg cause mood or behaviour changes in children?

Yes — neuropsychiatric side effects are the most important safety concern with Montelukast in all age groups. Some children may develop agitation (بے چینی), irritability, aggression, anxiety, nightmares, or sleep disturbances after starting Myteka. In rare cases, more serious effects including depression or hallucinations have been reported. Parents and caregivers should observe the child's behaviour carefully in the first weeks of treatment. If any mood or behavioural changes occur — stop the medicine and contact the doctor promptly (فوری طور پر ڈاکٹر سے رابطہ کریں). These effects are reversible when the medicine is stopped.

Can Myteka 5mg be used during an asthma attack?

No — Myteka is not a rescue medicine and must never be used to treat an acute asthma attack or sudden breathing difficulty. For acute attacks, use the child's prescribed rescue inhaler (such as Salbutamol — سالبوٹامول). If the child's breathing difficulty is severe or does not improve with the rescue inhaler, seek emergency medical attention immediately (فوری طبی مدد حاصل کریں).

If you notice any mood changes, agitation, nightmares, or behavioural changes in the child after starting Myteka, stop the medicine and consult the doctor immediately. Do not use Myteka as a rescue treatment during an acute asthma attack.
