What is Eyemox Eye Drops 0.5%?

Eyemox Eye Drops 0.5% contains Moxifloxacin, a modern broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye (آنکھ کا بیکٹیریل انفیکشن). It works by directly killing the bacteria responsible for the infection — relieving symptoms such as redness, itching, swelling, discharge, and discomfort in the eye. Moxifloxacin is one of the most advanced fluoroquinolone antibiotics available for ophthalmic use and is effective against a very wide range of bacteria — including many that are resistant to older antibiotic eye drops. Unlike combination drops that also contain a steroid, Eyemox is a pure antibiotic preparation — making it suitable for treating confirmed bacterial eye infections without the risks associated with steroid components. An important advantage of Eyemox is that it is a clear solution — meaning it does not need to be shaken before use and causes less temporary blurring after application compared to suspension-based eye drops. Eyemox Eye Drops must only be used as prescribed by your doctor.

What is Eyemox Eye Drops Used For?

Eyemox Eye Drops 0.5% is approved for the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) — bacterial infection of the conjunctiva — the thin membrane covering the white of the eye and inner eyelids — causing redness, discharge, and irritation (گلابی آنکھ — بیکٹیریل آشوب چشم)
  • Bacterial Keratitis — bacterial infection of the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye — a serious condition requiring prompt antibiotic treatment (آنکھ کی سطح کا بیکٹیریل انفیکشن)
  • Corneal Ulcer (Bacterial) — open sore on the cornea caused by bacterial infection requiring intensive antibiotic treatment
  • Blepharoconjunctivitis — combined bacterial infection of the eyelids and conjunctiva causing redness, crusting, and discharge
  • Acute Bacterial Endophthalmitis Prevention — used around the time of eye surgery to reduce the risk of serious internal eye infection
  • Post-Operative Prophylaxis — preventing bacterial infection following cataract surgery, corneal transplant, or other eye procedures
  • Stye (Hordeolum) with Secondary Conjunctival Infection — bacterial infection of the eyelid gland that has spread to involve the conjunctiva

How Does Eyemox Eye Drops Work?

Moxifloxacin is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria through a highly specific and powerful dual mechanism — making it one of the most effective topical antibiotics available for eye infections:

Dual Enzyme Inhibition: Moxifloxacin simultaneously targets and blocks two essential bacterial enzymes — DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Both enzymes are critical for bacterial DNA replication — the process by which bacteria copy their genetic material in order to reproduce and multiply. DNA gyrase controls the unwinding and supercoiling of bacterial DNA during replication, while topoisomerase IV is responsible for separating newly copied DNA strands so that daughter cells can form. By blocking both enzymes at the same time, Moxifloxacin completely halts bacterial DNA replication. Without the ability to replicate their DNA, bacteria cannot reproduce and quickly die. This dual-target mechanism is what makes Moxifloxacin particularly potent — bacteria would need to develop mutations in both enzymes simultaneously to become resistant, which is extremely unlikely. This is why Moxifloxacin is effective against many bacteria that have become resistant to older single-target fluoroquinolones.

Broad-Spectrum Coverage: Moxifloxacin is effective against an exceptionally wide range of bacteria responsible for eye infections — including Gram-positive organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA strains in some cases), Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus species, as well as Gram-negative organisms including Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Moraxella catarrhalis. It also covers some atypical organisms. This broad spectrum makes Eyemox suitable for treating bacterial eye infections even before the specific causative bacteria have been identified.

Preservative-Free Formulation Advantage: Eyemox 0.5% is formulated without the preservative benzalkonium chloride that is present in many other antibiotic eye drops. This makes it significantly gentler on the delicate surface of the eye — reducing the risk of ocular surface toxicity, contact lens incompatibility issues, and corneal cell damage that can occur with preservative-containing eye drops when used frequently or for extended periods.

Dosage and Administration

⚠️ For use in the eye only — never swallow eye drops or use in the ear. Always wash hands before applying. Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye, eyelashes, or any surface — this prevents contamination of the bottle. Always follow your doctor's instructions on dose and duration exactly.

Indication Usual Adult Dose Frequency
Bacterial Conjunctivitis 1 drop into the affected eye 3 times daily for 7 days
Bacterial Keratitis (mild to moderate) 1 drop into the affected eye Every 2 hours while awake for first 2 days — then 3 times daily
Corneal Ulcer (bacterial) 1 drop Every 1 to 2 hours while awake — as directed by eye specialist
Post-Operative Prophylaxis 1 drop As directed by your eye surgeon — typically 4 times daily
Children (over 1 year) 1 drop into the affected eye 3 times daily — as prescribed by doctor

How to Apply Eyemox Eye Drops Correctly:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling the bottle
  2. There is no need to shake Eyemox — it is a clear solution, not a suspension
  3. Remove the cap carefully — check the dropper tip is clean and undamaged
  4. Tilt your head backward and look upward toward the ceiling
  5. Gently pull the lower eyelid downward with a clean finger to create a small pocket between the eyelid and the eye
  6. Hold the bottle upside down just above the eye — do not let the dropper tip touch the eye, eyelashes, or any surface
  7. Squeeze the bottle gently to release exactly 1 drop into the lower eyelid pocket
  8. Close the eye gently and press the inner corner of the eye near the nose (nasolacrimal punctum) with a clean finger for 1 to 2 minutes — this is called nasolacrimal occlusion and minimises the amount of medicine draining into the throat
  9. Gently wipe away any excess drops from around the eye with a clean tissue — always use a separate tissue for each eye to avoid cross-contamination
  10. If treating both eyes, repeat the process for the second eye using the same bottle
  11. If using other eye drops at the same time, always wait at least 5 minutes before applying the next preparation
  12. Replace the cap tightly after every use
  • Complete the full prescribed course even if the eye looks and feels completely normal before the course ends — stopping early allows surviving bacteria to return and cause a relapse
  • Do not share this bottle with anyone else — eye infections can spread easily through shared bottles
  • Wash hands after applying drops if treating infective conjunctivitis as it is highly contagious

Active Ingredient

Ingredient Strength Role
Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride 0.5% (5mg per ml) Fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic — kills a broad range of bacteria causing eye infections

Who Should NOT Use Eyemox Eye Drops?

Do not use these drops if you:

  • Are allergic to Moxifloxacin, any other fluoroquinolone antibiotic (e.g., Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, Levofloxacin), or any other ingredient in the formulation
  • Have a viral eye infection — including Herpes simplex keratitis or adenoviral conjunctivitis — Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic with no effect against viruses
  • Have a fungal eye infection — Moxifloxacin has no activity against fungi — antifungal treatment is required
  • Are wearing soft contact lenses at the time of application — remove lenses before applying drops
  • Are under 1 year of age — safety in very young infants has not been fully established

Tell your doctor before use if you have:

  • A known allergy or sensitivity to any antibiotic — particularly any fluoroquinolone antibiotic — as cross-sensitivity is possible
  • A history of recurrent or antibiotic-resistant eye infections — sensitivity testing may be needed
  • Any pre-existing corneal disease or a history of corneal ulcers — close monitoring during treatment is needed
  • Had recent eye surgery — confirm with your surgeon before starting any new eye drops
  • If you wear contact lenses — your doctor will advise when it is safe to resume lens wear after treatment
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding — your doctor will assess safety before prescribing

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Eyemox Eye Drops can cause side effects. Because these drops are applied directly to the eye surface, side effects are generally mild and localised. Moxifloxacin is very well tolerated by most patients. Not everyone will experience side effects.

Common Side Effects (relatively frequent):

  • Mild temporary stinging or burning sensation immediately after applying the drops — usually settles within 1 to 2 minutes
  • Mild temporary blurring of vision immediately after application — wait for vision to clear before driving
  • Mild eye redness or irritation — usually temporary and improves as the infection clears
  • Watery eyes or increased tearing — temporary
  • Dry eye sensation — mild and usually temporary
  • Feeling of something in the eye (foreign body sensation) — usually resolves within minutes of application

Serious Side Effects (less common — seek medical help immediately):

  • Severe allergic reaction to Moxifloxacin — signs include sudden intense eye redness, swelling of the eyelids, widespread facial rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing — stop the drops immediately and seek emergency help
  • Allergic contact conjunctivitis — worsening eye redness, intense itching, eyelid swelling, and increasing discharge developing after starting treatment rather than improving — this may indicate an allergic reaction to the medicine — stop the drops and consult your doctor
  • Worsening of symptoms — if eye redness, pain, discharge, or vision problems worsen after 2 to 3 days of treatment rather than improving, stop the drops and see your doctor — the infection may be viral or fungal rather than bacterial, or caused by a resistant organism
  • Corneal deposits — rarely, white crystalline deposits have been reported on the corneal surface with Moxifloxacin eye drops — report any new visual disturbance or white spots visible in the eye to your doctor
  • Superinfection — prolonged antibiotic use can occasionally allow resistant bacteria or fungi to overgrow — signs include new or unusual discharge, pain, or visual changes developing after initial improvement
  • Photosensitivity — increased sensitivity of the eye to bright light during treatment — wear sunglasses outdoors if this occurs and inform your doctor

If you notice any serious side effects, stop using the drops immediately and seek urgent attention from an eye specialist or go to the nearest hospital emergency.

Drug Interactions

Eyemox Eye Drops are applied directly to the eye surface and systemic absorption is very low. Significant systemic drug interactions are therefore unlikely. However the following are important:

Consideration Details
Other eye drops Always wait at least 5 minutes between applying different eye drops to prevent dilution and ensure each medicine has time to absorb properly
Eye ointments If using eye ointment alongside drops, always apply drops first — wait at least 10 minutes — then apply ointment last
Other fluoroquinolone antibiotics (oral or IV) If the patient is also taking systemic fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., oral Moxifloxacin, Ciprofloxacin), inform your doctor — combined fluoroquinolone exposure should be discussed
Soft contact lenses Must be removed before applying drops and not reinserted until at least 15 minutes after application — preservative-free Moxifloxacin is gentler but contact lens wear is still not recommended during active eye infection
Medicines that prolong QT interval Systemic fluoroquinolones are known to affect heart rhythm — with eye drops the systemic absorption is minimal but inform your doctor if taking any medicines that affect heart rhythm as a precaution

Always inform your doctor and eye specialist about all medicines, eye preparations, vitamins, or supplements currently being used.

Storage Instructions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Eyemox Eye Drops used for?

Eyemox Eye Drops 0.5% is used to treat bacterial eye infections including bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye), bacterial keratitis, corneal ulcers caused by bacteria, and eyelid and conjunctival infections. It is also used to prevent infection after eye surgery. Moxifloxacin kills a very wide range of bacteria responsible for eye infections — including many bacteria resistant to older antibiotic eye drops.

How is Eyemox different from other antibiotic eye drops such as Tobramycin or Gentamicin?

Eyemox contains Moxifloxacin — a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone — which kills bacteria through a different mechanism and covers a broader range of organisms than aminoglycoside antibiotics like Tobramycin and Gentamicin. Moxifloxacin blocks two bacterial enzymes simultaneously, making it harder for bacteria to develop resistance. It is also a clear solution with no preservative — making it gentler on the eye surface and causing less temporary blurring after application. Your doctor will prescribe the most appropriate antibiotic based on the type and severity of your infection.

How quickly will Eyemox work on my eye infection?

Most patients with bacterial conjunctivitis notice a significant improvement in redness, discharge, and discomfort within 2 to 3 days of starting Eyemox. However it is essential to complete the full 7-day course even if the eye looks and feels completely normal before the course ends. Stopping early leaves surviving bacteria in the eye that can cause the infection to return — sometimes in a form that is harder to treat with the same antibiotic.

Can I use Eyemox Eye Drops for viral conjunctivitis?

No. Eyemox contains Moxifloxacin — an antibiotic that only kills bacteria. It has absolutely no effect against viral infections. Viral conjunctivitis — the most common form of pink eye — is caused by viruses such as adenovirus and does not respond to antibiotic eye drops. Using antibiotic drops for viral conjunctivitis will not cure the infection and risks developing antibiotic resistance. Your doctor will examine your eye and determine whether your infection is bacterial or viral before prescribing treatment.

Can I use Eyemox Eye Drops while wearing contact lenses?

Contact lenses must be removed before applying Eyemox Eye Drops and should not be reinserted until at least 15 minutes after application. More importantly, wearing contact lenses during an active eye infection is not recommended as it can worsen the infection and delay healing. Ask your doctor when it is safe to resume contact lens wear — typically after completing the full treatment course and the infection has completely resolved.

Is Eyemox Eye Drops safe for children?

Eyemox Eye Drops can be used in children over 1 year of age at the same dose as adults — 1 drop three times daily. For infants under 1 year of age, consult a specialist paediatric eye doctor before use. When applying drops to a child, ask them to lie down, look upward, and try to keep their eye open. For very young children, two people may be needed — one to hold the child gently and one to apply the drops.
