What is Esso 40mg Capsule?

Esso 40mg contains a higher dose of Esomeprazole — prescribed when moderate-to-severe acid suppression is required. It works identically to the 20mg strength by irreversibly blocking the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase proton pump in the stomach's parietal cells — completely shutting down acid production at its source. The 40mg dose is specifically indicated for conditions where the 20mg strength is insufficient — including severe GERD, erosive oesophagitis with significant mucosal damage, active ulcer healing, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome requiring aggressive acid control.

What is Esso 40mg Used For?

  • Severe GERD — chronic heartburn, acid regurgitation, and reflux not controlled by lower doses (سینے کی جلن)
  • Erosive oesophagitis — healing significant inflammation and acid-caused damage to the food pipe lining
  • Peptic and duodenal ulcers — active healing of gastric and intestinal ulcers (معدے کا السر)
  • H. pylori eradication — combined with antibiotics to eliminate H. pylori and prevent ulcer recurrence
  • NSAID-induced ulcers — healing and prevention of stomach ulcers in patients requiring long-term NSAID therapy
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome — managing extreme acid overproduction under specialist supervision

How Does Esso 40mg Work?

Esomeprazole irreversibly binds to and permanently disables the proton pumps responsible for secreting acid into the stomach. At 40mg, a greater proportion of active proton pumps are blocked compared to the 20mg dose — resulting in stronger and more complete acid suppression. This higher level of acid control is essential for healing severe oesophageal damage, eradicating H. pylori effectively, and managing conditions where acid output is extremely elevated.

Dosage and Administration

⚠️ Take exactly as prescribed. Do not self-adjust to a higher dose or extend treatment duration without medical advice — long-term PPI use requires regular monitoring.

Active peptic / duodenal ulcer 40mg once daily 4–8 weeks
H. pylori eradication 40mg once daily + antibiotics 7–14 days
NSAID ulcer healing 40mg once daily 4–8 weeks
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome 40mg twice daily (adjusted as needed) Long-term under specialist care

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is the difference between Esso 20mg and 40mg? Esso 40mg is prescribed for severe or active conditions requiring stronger acid suppression — once symptoms are controlled, your doctor may step down to 20mg for maintenance therapy.

Q: Why must Esso 40mg be taken before meals? Taking it 30–60 minutes before eating activates the proton pumps that Esomeprazole needs to bind to — taking it after food significantly reduces its effectiveness.

Q: Can Esso 40mg be taken long-term? Long-term use is appropriate when medically necessary, but requires regular review — prolonged high-dose PPI use can reduce magnesium and B12 levels and increase fracture risk over time.

Q: Can Esso 40mg mask symptoms of stomach cancer? Yes — always have persistent or unexplained stomach symptoms fully investigated before starting long-term acid suppression therapy, as PPIs can suppress warning symptoms.
