What is Epival IV Injection 500mg/5ml?

Epival IV Injection contains Divalproex Sodium (valproate sodium) — 500mg in each 5ml ampoule (100mg/ml). It is the injectable form of valproate, used in hospital settings when a patient cannot swallow oral tablets — for example during surgery, severe illness, or a medical emergency. It controls seizures and manages acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder. This medicine is administered by a doctor or trained healthcare professional only — it must never be self-administered.

What is Epival IV Injection Used For?

  • Epilepsy / Seizures (مرگی) — controls simple and complex absence seizures and complex partial seizures in both adults and children when oral medicine is not possible
  • Bipolar Disorder — Acute Mania — treats severe manic episodes in adults (18 and above) involving aggression, extreme agitation, and impulsive behaviour (جارحیت، بے قراری، اور جذباتی بے قابوپن)
  • Temporary Oral Replacement — used as a direct IV alternative when oral valproate cannot be taken temporarily — switched back to oral form as soon as the patient is able

How Does It Work?

Divalproex sodium increases GABA — a natural calming chemical in the brain. This reduces abnormal electrical activity that causes seizures and helps stabilise extreme mood swings associated with manic episodes.

How is It Given?

Epival IV Injection is given slowly into a vein (intravenous infusion) by a doctor or nurse in a clinical setting. The dose and duration are determined by the treating physician based on the patient's condition, weight, and current valproate therapy. It is not for home use.

Important Warnings

  • For hospital or clinical use only — must be given by a qualified healthcare professional
  • Not safe during pregnancy — risk of serious birth defects
  • Liver function and blood tests must be monitored during treatment
  • Use with extreme caution in patients with liver disease or bleeding disorders
  • Inform your doctor of all other medicines being taken — valproate has several important drug interactions

Common Side Effects

Nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, injection site reactions, tremors, and temporary hair thinning. Serious side effects include liver toxicity and low platelet count — report any unusual bruising, yellowing of skin, or severe weakness to your doctor immediately.
