Active Ingredient
Atorvastatin Calcium 20 mg
What Atorva 20 mg Is Used For
Atorva 20 mg is prescribed to lower elevated cholesterol levels in adults and children aged 10 years and older. This medication is indicated for:
- Reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C, or "bad" cholesterol) and triglycerides in the blood
- Increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, or "good" cholesterol)
- Treating primary hyperlipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia when diet and exercise alone are insufficient
- Reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events in patients with multiple risk factors for heart disease
- Treating homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (a genetic condition causing very high cholesterol)
Atorvastatin works by blocking an enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol, thereby reducing the amount of cholesterol that can build up on artery walls.

Serious Warnings and Precautions
Muscle Problems (Myopathy and Rhabdomyolysis): Atorvastatin can cause serious muscle problems that can lead to kidney damage. The risk increases with higher doses and when taken with certain other medications. Stop taking Atorva and call your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, especially if accompanied by fever or unusual fatigue.
Liver Problems: Atorvastatin can cause liver enzyme elevations. Your doctor should perform blood tests to check your liver function before you start taking this medication and as needed during treatment. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, upper abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of skin or eyes.
Diabetes Risk: Statins, including atorvastatin, may increase blood sugar levels and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, particularly in patients already at risk. Your doctor should monitor your blood sugar levels.
Memory Problems: Some people have reported memory loss and confusion while taking statins. These symptoms typically resolve when the medication is stopped.
