Product Description

Drug Class: Anticonvulsant / Mood Stabiliser  |  Form: Oral Syrup (Liquid)  |  Strength: 250mg/5ml  |  Prescription Status: Prescription Only (Rx)

What is Epival Syrup 120ml?

Epival Syrup contains Divalproex Sodium / Sodium Valproate at a strength of 250mg per 5ml. It is the liquid form of valproate — making it especially suitable for children, elderly patients, and anyone who has difficulty swallowing tablets. It controls seizures, manages manic episodes in bipolar disorder, and helps prevent migraines by calming overactive nerve activity in the brain. This is a prescription-only medicine — always use it under a doctor's supervision.

What is Epival Syrup Used For?

  • Epilepsy / Seizures (مرگی) — treats simple partial, complex partial, and absence (petit mal) seizures in adults and children — suitable as a first-line treatment or alongside other anti-epileptic medicines
  • Bipolar Disorder — Mania — manages acute manic episodes involving extreme mood swings, agitation, hyperactivity, and impulsive behaviour (جوش، بے قراری، اور انتہائی جذباتی کیفیت)
  • Migraine Prevention — reduces how often and how severely migraines occur in patients prone to recurring headaches

How Does It Work?

Sodium valproate increases GABA — a natural calming chemical in the brain — which reduces abnormal electrical activity responsible for seizures and helps stabilise extreme mood changes associated with bipolar disorder.

Dosage and How to Take

Epival Syrup is measured using the oral measuring syringe or spoon provided. It is usually given twice daily with food to reduce stomach upset. The dose is carefully calculated by the doctor based on the patient's weight — particularly in children. Always use the exact dose prescribed. Never increase or stop the dose without consulting your doctor.

Important Warnings

  • Not safe during pregnancy — risk of serious birth defects and developmental harm to the baby
  • Liver function and blood count monitoring required during treatment
  • Never stop suddenly — this can cause seizures to return
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment
  • May cause drowsiness — children should be monitored carefully after each dose

Common Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, increased appetite, weight gain, and mild hair thinning. These effects are often mild and improve with continued use. Contact your doctor if side effects are severe or do not settle.
